What it isFoursquare is an interesting hybrid of competition, location-based app and social network.
Once you have signed up to Foursquare, you can use your mobile phone to ‘check in’ at various locations when you are out and about. The more you check in, the more points you can earn, which can then win you ‘badges’ commemorating your achievements on the website.
If you check in to a venue more than anyone else, then you earn the badge of ‘mayor’ of that venue. This could be of a shop, a cafe or even a park!
So, on Foursquare you do more than just communicate with friends – you are also in competition with them!
How to use itThere is a Foursquare app for iPhone, Android and Blackberry which makes checking in easy, or you can use your mobile internet or text updates to 50500 (in USA).
Then you just have to remember to check in wherever you are and watch your collection of badges grow.
Why to use itThere are too many good things about Foursquare to list them all here, but its main plus point is that it is a uniquely fun and competitive social network.
It can also be financially rewarding – if you are mayor of a venue they may reward you with special prizes or discounts.
