FourSquare, Gowalla, and DreamWalk

Three of the most innovative iPhone apps are FourSquare, Gowalla, and DreamWalk. Each of them strives to be the most relevant local app in the neighborhood, and each takes a different approach to that goal. Marketing has certainly taken off in the iPhone world, and these three map apps are taking full advantage of that niche. GPS-based advertising is, quite possibly, the next leap forward in the continual progress made toward personalized marketing.

Let’s take a look at all three of the apps, starting with FourSquare. This is similar to a popularity contest – it ranks the popularity of each mapped place with users! Each time someone visits a place and checks in, they receive points. When users build up enough points, they become mayors of their favorite hangouts. Marketers rejoice – you can gain customer loyalty by offering prizes to the mayor of your iPhone check-in spot.

Gowalla is a social networking app that offers cute stamps for visiting certain places. It uses GPS to find out where you are, and it will only let you check in if you are close enough to a checkpoint. It allows users to go on trips, in which they visit multiple spots at one go. It is a lot of fun, but it doesn’t include coupons or freebies for loyal visitors.

DreamWalk takes a slightly different approach and is branded as the mobile treasure hunt. Many companies have already hopped on the DreamWalk bandwagon by planting free prizes or ‘treasures’ on the app’s GPS map. Once a user spies a treasure, he or she can follow the GPS map to the treasure’s location to claim it. Businesses can even require the user to visit multiple locations in order to receive the prize.

All three of these GPS-based apps gives the savvy marketer something to work with. Explore your options. With a GPS app, your clients will never be lost!
